Punxsutawney’s first day of school was without the familiar sight of crossing guards. As we’ve previously reported, Punxsutawney’s Police Department had requested that the school take over the administration of crossing guards for the schools and the Borough would continue to pay for half of the expenses and train the guards. Superintendent Dr. Keith Wolfe has said that the school would not be able to take over the administrative duties of the crossing guards and as such there would be no crossing guards when school began. That became a reality yesterday as there were no crossing guards out to direct children when to cross streets. Reports say that the day went off without a problem. District officials are hopeful that they can reach an agreement later this school year.

One person was injured in a crash Monday near Brookville. Punxsy-based state police say that Shirley Zimmerman, 64 of Brookville, was driving on Knox Dale Road and was going downhill when for unknown reasons, her car went off the road and onto the east berm. The car continued on the east berm for about 80 feet before veering off into the woods and hitting a tree. Zimmerman suffered Minor injuries in the crash and was taken to Brookville Area Hospital for treatment of injuries. The car was disabled and had to be towed from the scene.

Brookville Police are investigating a case of missing items and are asking the public for help. According to Police, the items went missing Monday night in front of the Finders Keepers store on Main Street. William Bowley had been unloading some items off a truck when a customer came by the store. He left the items near the curb at the intersection of Main Street and Franklin Avenue to tend to the customer, but when he got back, the items were gone. The items that went missing include a White Leather Chair with a polka-dot cover, a U-haul hand truck, and a kitchen broom. Police do not know at this time if the items were stolen, or if they were mistaken for garbage and picked up by accident. Either way, police want your help in recovering the items. If you have any information, call Brookville Police at 849-5323.

Homicide charges have been dropped in the death of an IUP student, but the suspect still faces charges of aggravated assault. According to our Indiana News Bureau, Indiana County District Attorney Tom Bianco dropped charges of homicide against 19-year-old Yeaseam Nelson of Philadelphia, an IUP student who police say had a fellow student in a chokehold on July 31st. According to our previous reports, Nelson had intervened in an argument involving 19-year-old Mikhail Young, an IUP student from Indiana and placed Young in a chokehold. Nelson and his group had left the Copper Beech apartment where the incident took place, believing that Young was unconscious. When they returned, Young was still on the floor and by that time, he was dead. Coroners at the Connemaugh Memorial Medical Center said that Young’s death was due to a medical condition called lymphocytic myocarditis, an inflammation of the middle layer of the heart wall due to a viral infection. The autopsy report said that the attack by Nelson did not lead to Young’s death. Nelson is still facing charges of reckless endangerment and aggravated assault. District Attorney Bianco said that he is investigating to see if the attack could have triggered the death, but he said it’s unlikely he’ll re-file homicide charges.
